Students applying to the EYS are not required to speak English for admission. Students in PK and K1 acquire English through immersion in English instruction taught by bilingual staff.

In the ES, EAL services are limited and admission is dependent on the number of vacancies in the program. When assessment results indicate that support is necessary, students attend daily EAL class during the grade level reading block to build skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students in the beginning of their English language development in G4-5, are placed in the English Academy for an additional fee. Students are in a homeroom class co-taught with an EAL teacher and receive language support in all of their core academic classes. Students remain in the program until meeting the exit criteria.

In MS, EAL services are delivered through the Accelerated English Academy and/or English for Academic Purposes. This is a fee-based program.

In the AEA, an adapted humanities course replaces the standard language arts and social studies classes. The course includes content while focusing on the four foundational skills of language learning: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The AEA also provides language inclusion support in math and science classes.

Nido requires students to enroll in the EAP class, Nido’s less intensive language support program, if they qualify with an intermediate level of English and/or as they transition from the AEA program. 

The AEA has a very limited number of seats available; middle school students must demonstrate, at minimum, a beginning level of English. Eligibility for the fee-based AEA program (AEA and EAP classes) is determined through a language evaluation. Entry to and exit from the program are based upon performance data.

In HS, EAL services are delivered through the Accelerated English Academy and/or English for Academic Purposes. This is a fee-based program. An adapted English class, delivered to intermediate English language learners, includes instruction in reading, writing, speaking and listening using novels used in standard HS English courses. The AEA may also provide language inclusion support in students’ science and history classes; students are concurrently enrolled in the EAP class for additional targeted support. Students who require a less intensive language program or who transition out of the AEA may qualify for EAP only.

The AEA has a very limited number of seats available. High school students must demonstrate an intermediate English level to manage the reading and writing expectations. HS students enrolled in the AEA program are not eligible to enroll in the IBDP program. Entry to and exit from this program are based upon performance data.

GRADES 9-12 (high SCHOOL) REQUIREMENTS

Nido has specialized faculty to address skills in reading, writing, math, and executive functioning in most grades. Students may receive services and limited accommodations in the classroom and/or a pull-out model. 

Recommendations for learning support are determined through a record review, interview, observation, and/or evaluation. Learning support services are fee-based in grades 6-12. 

Nido does not have the capacity to support students that qualify for both English Language support and learning support.

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) provides speech therapy and occupational therapy, both are fee-based.  LRC therapists support students and families through direct, indirect or consultative services. The LRC team has the knowledge and expertise to impact and increase student participation in school routines and activities. 

Math Lab is an alternate pathway for high school students who require specialized levels of curriculum support. This is a non IB class and students earn high school math credit. Instruction and support in a small group setting allow learners to address gaps, strengthen skills and acquire mathematical literacy. Math Lab is a fee-based program. 

Nido’s PK-12 counselors focus on student wellbeing through robust social-emotional and academic counseling services. Our Guidance and Counseling Team includes professionally trained psychologists and school counselors whose mission is to provide solution-focused counseling services and programming and to facilitate communication and coordination of care for individual counseling cases. For individual cases, we use a Student Study Team (SST) model, coordinating among counselors, teachers, administration, parents, learning support, and any outside specialists the student might have.
