As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting students with diverse learning profiles, Nido hosted a Professional Learning Day for faculty and staff on Friday, May 2. This day of growth and collaboration is one of the many ways we continue to invest in meaningful learning opportunities for our faculty and staff. The day included training on key topics, such as the Social Thinking method, and presentations from colleagues who recently participated in the AMISA Educators’ Conference in Panama.
Faculty were introduced to Social Thinking, a language-based approach aimed at developing social competencies. The session began with insights from Nido students and faculty about the needs of neurodiverse learners, followed by an inspiring keynote from former Nido parent and teacher Shelley Hawkes. Social Thinking emphasizes social problem-solving, cognitive flexibility, and understanding emotions and perspectives, offering practical tools for students, educators, and parents to improve social success. Division-specific sessions led by Counselors, Learning Support, and Homeroom teachers allowed faculty to apply the approach in their teaching directly.
The AMISA presentations also provided an excellent opportunity for colleagues to engage with cutting-edge topics, including AI tools in education, inclusive co-teaching models, service animals in international schools, and women in entrepreneurship and leadership.
These initiatives reflect our belief that everyone at Nido is a learner, not just our students. By equipping our educators with the latest knowledge and skills, we ensure they are prepared to support and inspire students in all areas of their development.
