As part of the Changemakers program, our 5th grade Nido learners are diving into the “Restore, Protect, Be Well” unit, exploring the question: “How might we restore and protect the natural state of Chilean animals and their habitats?” This initial inquiry combines life science and civics learning goals while integrating the importance of protecting and restoring the natural environment of Chilean animals and their habitats.
On Monday, they met Congressman Jorge Alessandri, who shared insights into how Chilean laws can protect us, animals, and the environment from plastic pollution in Chile. Students generated thoughtful questions about policy creation and learned about current protections in place to safeguard the country's incredible biodiversity.
A couple of days later, they took a field trip to Mantagua, where they helped restore and improve the local coastal habitat. Next, they will continue their exploration with a final inquiry on a handful of human body systems, their specific function and structure, and how the body is ‘wired for wellness and survival’. Students will design interactive experiences for younger students to help promote the importance of wellness.
