The November 17 Spotlight goes to Nido’s High School and Middle School students in the Model United Nations Club who participated in the International MUN Conference!

November 3 was a special day. After months and months of planning, Nido hosted its first International NidoMUN Conference. Student leaders worked for seven months to make the NidoMUN Conference exceptional! Over 160 students from schools all over South America attended. In addition, 30 Nido students from MS and HS participated as delegates, and 30 Nido high schoolers served as NidoMUN staff.

During the conference, delegates debated and discussed international issues –such as gun control laws, human rights protection in Qatar, and even water security– for more than 10 hours with the goal of creating comprehensive solutions to address them. It was an unforgettable experience. “Model United Nations is an opportunity for students to feel agency in addressing the world’s problems. Although it's a model of the United Nations, the problems they work to address are real; thus, they feel the urgency to research and find solutions because it matters. It is important for Nido to have a MUN Club because it prepares students to lead their peers in investigations and persuasion,” explains Ms. Grace Rector.

Ms. Rector adds that through their involvement in MUN, students learn how to conduct research, speak confidently, and collaborate with others. She says that “the skills students learn through the club will make them confident leaders in their classrooms and eventually the workplace. MUN teaches students how to problem solve, how to communicate their ideas, and how to bring people together.”

Rebeca, the Undersecretary of Middle School Committees, says, “MUN allows students to improve in areas such as their leadership, research, public speaking skills, and so on.” Also, she thinks it’s a valuable experience that will help them after they graduate. “ Every mistake is a learning experience. Looking at the inner works of the United Nations gives you a different perspective on how the problems in our world are solved, and stepping into the next stage in life with this knowledge is essential.”

We congratulate our students for their hard work, dedication, and passion for respectful and founded discussions and public speaking skills. We also want to thank the MUN advisors, Ms. Rector and Mr. Bill Murray and the support staff team who worked behind the scenes to make this event possible. Every one of our students and staff members is a great representation of #TheNidoWay. We will remember this MUN forever!

The November 10 Spotlight goes to our recently appointed Elementary School Principal, Jon Penhollow!

Jon arrived in Nido nine years ago but fell in love with Chile when he was only 19 on a trip as a student. After that first visit, he returned to the US, serving as Middle School Assistant Principal (2008-2011) and Elementary Principal (2011-2014) in Salem, Oregon. In 2014, he and his family moved to Chile so that Jon could join Nido as ES Assistant Principal. Currently, Jon’s wife teaches in the EYS, his oldest daughter is a Nido alum and his youngest, a current senior. At Nido he has used every bit of his knowledge, skills, and experience to strengthen the ES.

Since beginning in July 2022 as our Interim ES Principal, he has focused on fostering a schoolwide sense of unity and community, putting students at the center of their work. “In the Elementary School, the groundwork is laid for children to become leaders in their own learning. We see agency in their own learning beginning to develop and having students have a voice is incredibly important to us,” he says.

A fluent speaker of Spanish with strong ties to Chilean and North American culture, we are excited that Jon will continue to lead our Elementary School. As Elementary Principal, he will work collaboratively across divisions to build what he described at the opening assembly of elementary school this July as Un Nido Unido. “We want students to recognize the values that unite us in a complex world without diminishing the individualities of each child,” he explains.

Jon shares that what he loves most about Nido is how happy everyone is at school. “That is one of the distinguished characteristics of this school. People feel the warmth, the connectedness, the happiness, the genuine joy of being a part of this community and helping the children grow,” he says.

He adds that this also is reflected in Chilean culture. “I enjoy the warmth of the Chilean people. The way they treat family and how everyone is connected. That's why I wanted to come back, I don’t like big cities, but the people here are amazing,” he explains.

As Assistant and Interim Principal, Jon has demonstrated his deep commitment to Nido’s future success. Thank you, Jon, for supporting teachers and students to develop a strong sense of community and advocating #TheNidoWay in our Elementary School. Please join us in congratulating Jon Penhollow as we strive to build Un Nido Unido!
