New Sustainability Partnership with Eco-Lógica

With the goal of moving towards a more sustainable campus, Nido de Aguilas is pleased to announce its new partnership with Eco-Lógica. Eco-Lógica works with many major organizations in a variety of industries, and Nido will be their first school partner.

Eco-Lógica was created to help companies and organizations address their problems of generating too much landfill waste. The company has more than 20 success stories of working with organizations to greatly reduce their waste.

Juan Pablo Marín, Eco-Lógica manager, says "To date, we have worked with many industries, but never with a school, which motivates us a lot...it will allow us to address these challenges in the country regarding waste with future generations."

Nido was searching for a company that could manage all of its waste. Our Facilities Department met with Eco-Lógica and was especially impressed with their Dashboard software that will allow the school to see what we are wasting and recuperating. We now have the opportunity to be more targeted in first reducing and then recycling.

In working with Eco-Lógica, we hope to better educate and train our faculty, staff, and students in how and where to recycle different materials. With the data from Eco-lógica, we will also be able to identify the waste that is not recyclable and develop campaigns to reduce that waste.

Even before partnering with Eco-Logica, with funds from Kermess, Nido had begun this important work with a consultant to create a Sustainability Report to guide our school. Based on their suggestion that there needed to be a person assigned to implement this report, Alisha Stiteler was recently named Sustainability Coordinator in addition to her responsibilities as Facilities Assistant. "The role of our students will be key," says Alisha Stiteler, Nido Sustainability Coordinator and Facilities Assistant. "The new generations have more knowledge of the consequences and impact of our consumption. They already worry about changing their habits and have no problem confronting, for example, someone who threw away a plastic bottle instead of recycling it. They will be the ones who will make the change and who will create solutions to the problems that previous generations created;, that is why it is so important to involve them in this process."

In addition to harnessing the passion of our students and other community members, part of Alisha's role is to prioritize the recommendations of the report given the realities of the school, to work with a new Sustainability Committee to create criteria for Capital projects, and to help implement new guidelines. The very first and critical phase, however, involves implementing and installing ways to measure our current use of resources such as electricity meters and the new waste management dashboard. Having partnered with Tri-Ciclos this past year, we have already learned to appreciate the data of our effort—we learned that between August 2018 and April 2019, we recycled 4,271 KG of paper, plastic, metal, and glass. Other initiatives next year will focus on water usage reduction and moving to the usage of more recyclable materials.

We know our community is already engaged in caring for the planet and will be excited to take on this new challenge. We will share more information at the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year.
