Nido recently conducted a worldwide search to select a High School Principal for the 2018-2019 academic year and is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Kate McKenna to the position of High School Principal beginning in July 2018.
Kate comes to Nido with over 16 years of high school experience. She is currently in her seventh year as the High School Vice Principal of Shanghai American School, a leading international school in China. Kate brings to Nido extensive experience in student support, curriculum development, improving teaching practices, experiential learning, school improvement, and strategic planning.
After serving as Assistant Director of Admissions at The University of the South, Kate began her career in high schools in college counseling first at Sidwell Friends School and then at Episcopal High School, both in the Washington, DC area. She then moved into international schools working as a Counselor, English Teacher, and AP Coordinator at the American Overseas School of Rome in Italy and then at the American School of Asuncion, Paraguay. Kate moved into administration at the American College of Sofia in Bulgaria where she served as the Director of College Counseling, among other responsibilities, before moving to her current position in Shanghai. She and her family are very excited to move back to Latin America and look forward to joining the Nido community.
When asked why she chooses to work with high school students, Kate says she is "excited to serve as your next high school principal because I believe that high school is a place for inquiry and self-discovery. It is always a privilege to see students uncover new passions and develop their strengths as they grow from being freshmen to seniors. I look forward to joining you on that journey and working with you to make our school a place that you are proud to call your 'home away from home'."
Kate holds a Doctorate in Education from Nova Southeastern University, an MA in English Literature from Middlebury College, and a BA in English Literature from the University of the South - Sewanee. In addition, Kate completed a Certificate in International School Leadership from the Principals' Training Institute, an Educational Specialist Degree in Mental Health Practices in Schools from the University of Missouri, and a Certificate in International Counseling from Lehigh University.
