Dear Nido Community, We wanted to provide an update on our campus reopening plans. First of all, we want to thank all the families that participated in the survey, of which we received an 83% response rate. As planned, the School has also submitted our application to the SEREMI of Health. Taking into consideration the results of the divisional surveys, the feedback received in the small group parent forums, and the results of the most recent surveys to parents, faculty and staff, the School will reopen its campus in November, pending approval from the SEREMI of Health, for controlled and limited use of facilities and voluntary and predominantly outdoor activities for students. The primary academic program will remain online in distance learning for the remainder of the semester. More information about the use of facilities, and what recreational and co-curricular activities may be available in each division, will be sent in the coming weeks. We are confident with the strategy that we have decided to engage as we believe this will be the most effective way, consistent with the survey feedback, to deliver our whole-student educational program—to attend to the academic, social and emotional growth, and wellbeing of all of our students. The survey results conveyed overwhelmingly positive feedback about the academic program, which we decided not to disrupt (more on that below), but also feedback reporting that increased screen-time, a lack of physical activity, and a lack of connection to peers are concerns for our community. At this time of uncertainty, our team has decided that the School's best move forward is to preserve the continuity of our academic program online while opening campus in a safe way to address the wellbeing of our students and to provide limited supplemental academic activities. We are also confident that committing to this plan through the end of the semester, to the extent that circumstances allow, will provide as much certainty and security as possible for our community. Regarding the point made above concerning the continuity of the academic program online, an important consideration for us, in addition to the positive feedback about the existing program, was about the potential impact of disruption. As you might imagine for a school of our size and complexity, we need to plan programmatic shifts long in advance of making them. Starting last semester and continuing into this, we planned for three different scenarios: online teaching, hybrid teaching, and only in-person teaching (each of the three requiring distinctly different methodologies and schedules, as well as each needing differing types of administrative and operational support). Further, while we had all hoped that conditions would have improved faster than they ultimately did and that we, therefore, could have moved from online classes to our hybrid model by now, this turned out not to be the case as seen with Lo Barnechea not entering Step 3 until September 28th. While we have had all of our return plans in place for quite some time, as you can imagine, the actual implementation of inviting such a large student body back to campus is a long, step-by-step process, and our plans shifted and changed as we benefited from the experiences of our strong network of other international schools around the world. Once approved by Seremi, we anticipated a fairly long transition period educating the entire community about expected behaviors. Even if we had assessed that we could have successfully transitioned from online to hybrid within a reasonable period of time, we would have faced the obstacle that roughly half of our families, as indicated in the surveys, would not feel comfortable sending their children back to school in the current conditions. Further, even if we had been able to return to campus for our hybrid program, we knew that there would exist a possibility of having to close again, either because we had cases of the Virus or because the comuna regressed to Step 2. Prioritizing the continuity of our academic program, we did not want to take that risk of further disruption to our students' education. We all hope that sanitary conditions will continue to improve. We also know that as good news comes our way, you may be tempted to think that we should be initiating our hybrid model. We understand this perspective but ask that you trust our research, experience, and ensuing decision. More than anything, we care about what is best for our students. We believe that the integrity of their core academic program will be best preserved by continuing online for now and by launching our hybrid model in February. Our incredible teachers will be excited for that launch and are meanwhile empowered by your support and being able to count on their teaching methodology and curriculum for the rest of this semester. Next, prior to a return to campus in any format we must ensure that all community members are aware of the health and safety protocols that will be a part of how we act on-campus and in our day-to-day lives in order to keep our entire community safe. More information on community education and an agreement that all parents, faculty and staff, and our older students must sign prior to entering campus, as well as more information about the spaces and activities that will be available, will be sent in the coming weeks. Faculty and staff, not in high-risk groups, will be asked to come onto campus prior to students for training and orientation. In terms of next semester, more details about the hybrid model will come later. We do ask that everyone keep in mind, now when making any travel plans, that families may need to self-quarantine for up to fourteen days prior to entering campus if any member of their household is arriving from outside of Chile. Please also remember that all plans are subject to new and changing information available each day on the COVID-19 Virus. We acknowledge that we are all longing to come back to campus, receive our students and take advantage of the facilities and activities over the next couple of months. However, we are mindful of the evolving health conditions and, therefore, ask for everyone's collaboration and understanding as we move forward with decisions. Let's work together around this plan that will allow us to begin to welcome students, faculty, and staff on campus according to the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education's regulations. Let's come together in a way that we, as educators, believe addresses the integrity of our academic program and the wellbeing of our students, all while protecting the health and safety of all of our community members. Warm regards, David B. Perry Headmaster Please direct any questions on our reopening plan to community@nido.cl. Our entire team is turning its attention to the plans to welcome back faculty, staff, and students in the next few weeks and we may not be able to respond individually, but we will read each message and consider common themes in our planning and upcoming communications. ©2020 The International School Nido de Aguilas Unsubscribe Link Archive Link Confidentiality Notice: This email and any attachments contain information belonging to Nido de Aguilas which may be confidential.
