Dear Nido Community, I hope the first day of distance learning is going well and that you and your family are healthy. Please remember that in addition to any assignments that our students should also be engaging in exercise at home, reading for pleasure, connecting with their friends online in a safe way, and eating well and staying hydrated. Our counselors in each division are also working during this time and available for any concerns. Today, President Sebastián Piñera announced that Chile has moved to Phase 4 regarding COVID-19. As of March 16, there are 155 confirmed cases in Chile. What does Phase 4 mean? At this stage, the virus is considered to have a "sustained transmission in the country", with a possible exponential growth of the virus in the population. This category is given by the World Health Organization (WHO). The steps taken by the Chilean government are the following: - Beginning Wednesday, March 18th, all land, sea and air borders of Chile will be closed to foreigners. Chilean nationals and permanent residents in Chile, who come from high-risk places, may enter the country undergoing Sanitary Customs and must do a mandatory 14-day quarantine. The government will prosecute those who do not comply with instructions given by health authorities (self-quarantine).
- Provisions: the entry and exit of cargo or carriers will be allowed to continue the guarantee of a normal supply of goods.
- Only essential ceremonies, events or public acts with a maximum participation of 50 people will be held.
- All public officials over the age of 70 or who are part of a risk (vulnerable health) group may carry out their work duties from home.
- Companies are encouraged to establish special measures in order to adopt more flexible working and teleworking.
- Travel abroad by public officials will be restricted to those that are absolutely essential.
At this moment, we recommend that everyone stay home if possible in self-quarantine with their families and practice social distancing so that we help slow the spread of the virus and not overwhelm the health care services in Santiago. Please see some tips on what social distancing means, and remember to frequently wash your hands and practice other common preventative health measures. For those who signed up for a flu vaccine for themselves or their children, we will be sending more information soon on how you can still receive the vaccine. Campus Closure Effective March 17, Nido's campus will be closed for parents, students, and teachers and only essential personnel will be allowed on campus. Faculty and staff will be working from home. School Communication Parents and guardians who have questions about specific classrooms and learning progress for their child are encouraged to contact their child's teachers by email. For other child-related concerns, parents should reach out to their divisional counselor or principal. If you are not sure who to contact, please refer to the Nido webpage.
Cordiales saludos, David B. Perry Rector |
