Music: Choir - String Orchestra - Concert Band
We look forward to bringing students together again from around South America to form three formidable ensembles; a Concert Band, a Choir and a String Orchestra. We hope to inspire the best of your musicians to join us by choosing high quality, challenging music inspired by the theme, ‘Magical Realism’. Each Musical Director will be invited to conduct one or more of their selections with the students benefiting from a range of conducting styles. Students will also enjoy workshops that will enhance their lifelong appreciation of music and develop their skills.
Visual Arts We are thrilled to invite students to embark on a visual exploration of the theme of Magical Realism. This open-ended topic encourages students to delve into their creativity and engage in conceptual thinking. The exploration unfolds in two phases. In the first phase, students will create individual artworks (ceramic tiles) at their own schools before the festival. These pieces will then be brought to Nido, where students will collaborate to merge their creations into a single, permanent artwork that will be displayed on the Nido campus for everyone to enjoy. The second phase involves a collaborative effort on Nido’s campus, where students will use a variety of provided materials to construct three-dimensional forms. This phase offers an additional opportunity for students to deepen their exploration of Magical Realism, blending concepts and imagery in a hands-on, immersive experience.
Phase One - Exhibition tiles (to be made at your own schools): Students should bring 3 equal sized handbuilt and/or glazed ceramic tiles to be exhibited in a permanent collaborative wall display.
- Each tile should be 15cm x 15cm (An email will be sent out soon to confirm your size capabilities.)
- The tiles should contain a three part ‘figure’ expressing the students own interpretation of the festival theme.
- The tiles should be created to fit a vertical format
- Tile 1 - representative of a ‘head’. This tile should include a head, neck and the upper part of the shoulders.
- Tile 2 - representative of a ‘body’. This tile should begin just below the upper part of the shoulder and end at the mid hips.
- Tile 3 - representative of ‘legs’. This tile should begin at the mid hips and continue through the legs and feet.
Students may glaze their tiles any color to fit their interpretation of the theme. Examples of Exquisite Corpse Imagery: By Norma V. Toraya By Leona Sewitsky By Edward Gorey
Phase two - Collaborative 3-dimensional forms
- It’s a surprise! Further information will be provided at the conference.
Drama For the theater component of this festival, schools will collaborate with one another to put together three short plays that explore the theme of Magical Realism. Two schools will work together on a 20 minute play. Students will be allocated parts and must memorize their part before coming to Santiago. Once in situs, the students will work with teachers to put the plays together. There will be two to three teachers guiding each group and will be able to direct the students from different schools to make a cohesive performance. Workshops will be geared towards the plays that we are putting on.
Film
This year, the Film Crew will change the nature of our team’s interdisciplinary work to focus on creating a work of art that integrates all the disciplines in creative collaboration. We will create three short films based on the idea of Magical Realism and in the style of a director who they will study, leveraging not only the skills of the film students as the crews, but composers from the music department, actors from drama, and production designers from art. The various discipline teachers at each school are invited to offer this opportunity as a different way of engaging the students’ creative engagement at SAAC for a few selected students. Between all of the participating schools, we would like three individuals for each of the following roles (3 total, not 3 per school):
- Music Composers
- Actors (1 or 2 per school, see the Drama description above)
- Production Designers (Including the design of props, costumes, arranging ‘sets’, makeup).
As well as students within the film discipline for the following roles:
- Director
- Cinematographer
- Editor
- Sound Designer
Once the students are selected for participation, they will be organized into teams before the conference. Teams will be given parameters for their films and given support material to develop their ideas within the context of their individual roles. They will work collaboratively with their team-mates online to develop their script, mood boards, and storyboards as well as other pre-production materials so that they are ready to film their narratives when they arrive.
