THE FRESHMEN EXPERIENCE: Options for Grade 9 Students

"Multisport" is a special educational program prepared for Nido students. It is a trip combining three different activities in one of Chile’s most traditional locations. It is also a personal challenge, since every member of this adventure will have to face his/her own personal goals.

The trip entails gently pushing the comfort zone of our physical and mental abilities, organization skills, even our ability to work as a group.

With very clear educational goals, our group of students will travel through the Colchagua Valley learning about traditions, history, flora, and fauna of the area.

Students will use bikes, kayaks and horses to see and discover interesting and beautiful corners of Colchagua from Santa Cruz all the way to the coast.

As leaders of this trip, we will put a special emphasis on “LEAVE NO TRACE” concept, TEAM WORK and LEADERSHIP.

We will visit different points of Santiago on our bicycles, to know the city from another perspective. For those interested in approaching the practice of trekking, “Santiago Summits, Level 101” is a good opportunity since it will be 5 days where we will learn the basic techniques to perform this type of outdoor activities. We will tour the main hills around Santiago, where we will gradually increase the difficulty, to be able to measure our progress at the end
of the week. We will learn hiking techniques, principles of leaving no trace and safety and consideration that must be taken when carrying out this type of activities.

In this program students will learn to paddle in a Polynesian canoe (Va'a) with the best instructors in Chile of this discipline.

Finally, they will have the opportunity to ride a MTB bike and improve their technique, through forest and coastal landscapes.

We will start the week with a bicycle clinic where we will learn or remind ourselves of basic bike riding skills, posture, techniques, etc and then cover the basic care and maintenance we have to have with our bikes. For the next few days we can visit different terrains and places to test and increase our level on 2 wheels. We will visit places like the hills of San Carlos de Apoquindo, and Hacienda Las Varas, to end the week on the trails of La Campana National Park, and the Quebrada del Tigre in the V Region.

For the more rugged mountain enthusiasts and a more challenging trekking, the advanced level of “Santiago Summits” will take you to know 2 great landmarks around Santiago. In the first instance we will measure the abilities and levels of the participants, making an ascent to Cerro Pochoco, reinforcing knowledge of  trekking techniques, outdoor cooking and principles of leaving no trace. We'll also perform various individual and team challenges in our Challenge Center at Km 11 of Camino a Farellones, where we will discuss topics about teamwork and communication, important concepts for our ultimate goal, to make an approach to the El Morado Glacier.

In NAT we love nature, which teaches us about her processes, her ways and fills us with inspiration. Located 900 meters above sea level, in the Andes Mountains, Lonquimay is a land of natural beauties, were centuries-old Araucarias predominate the landscape and snow capped mountains sit in the background. In winter, it is a backcountry ski and snowboarding paradise, whilst summer is warm enough for hikes and water sports.

During our 7-day-trip, we will not only be tourists in one of the most unexplored and beautiful places in Chile, but we will also be continually immersed in outdoor learning experiences. The program is designed to be a living experience in sustainability and
cultural conscience of the Maule Region, through nature exploration and
adventures in the Chilean forest. The students will live and learn in depth
about flora and fauna of the region and have the opportunity to show their
findings and debate the results. The students will have adventures and experience horseback riding, hiking, camping in the woods, and also experience the amazing region in the mountains famous for myths around UFO culture in this area. They will also learn survival skills such as gathering their meals and cooking them, orienteering through natural means, also learn to know their body and its limits by physically challenging themselves. It's up to you students to communicate with Casa Grada to learn what needs they have for this year, then make a plan with your group, divide up the responsibilities and lead your group to success. A small group will play and conduct activities for nursing babies and toddlers that will appreciate your love and care.

Friday will culminate with an outing of taking the children to the Buin Zoo or the Granja Educativa in La Reina for the day.

Hogar Misión de María

Hogar Mision de Maria is an orphanage for babies and children 0 - 3 years of age. The children are given shelter and love while they wait to return to their biological families or get adopted. This WWW trip will be a week of service and will include: helping to care for and give the children individual attention and help paint and clean at the hogar. It's up to you students to communicate with Mision de Maria to learn what needs they have for this year, then make a plan with your group, divide up the responsibilities and lead your group to success. One highlight of the trip will be to take the oldest babies and children to the Granja Educativa in La Reina or other fun excursions. 

Visión For Chile

Casa Esperanza is located in the commune of La Pintana, an area that experiences many social conflicts, segregation, poverty, drug addiction, teenage pregnancy and many of childrens' orphanages (the majority collaborating of SENAME). Our program is focused on supporting schools with differential needs and work in construction. We will be working in the community center where we serve 50 students of SENAME CHILDREN'S homes and children of the sector every week, in addition to remodeling the community center and one room of the residence for young women who do not have a home after their residence in girls' homes has terminated due to their age.

A magical journey to the “belly button of the world", a very old island of volcanic origin.

We will get to know the most interesting places of Rapa Nui, such as the idyllic Anakena beach, the Moais, the quarry where the Moais were cut from and the famous volcanoes. We will be able to interact with the islanders to get to know their customs, understand their culture and the rituals unique to these people of land and sea, and also have dancing and painting classes with them.

We will be able to snorkel and Kayak to appreciate the marine life, watching turtles and different fish species.

This Advanced SCUBA program at Golden Frog Scuba is for students who already have their OPEN WATER certification and want to become Advanced or learn another Specialty.

Dive sites include such history as remains from Sir Francis Drake’s armada (1561) and the island where Captain Morgan anchored during his attack on Portobello.

Golden Frog Scuba will offer students the opportunity to gain increased expertise in SCUBA diving by learning additional skills (knot tying, navigation, underwater problem solving, SAR [search and rescue] and night diving) to become Advanced Certified. Students will learn to work in collaboration as a team utilizing the buddy system. Students will also participate in lionfish hunting, learning how to safely catch and properly clean this fish to be used as a food source. Lionfish are an invasive species that are a threat to our aquatic environment.

A unique feature of the rainforest surrounding Iquitos is its lack of a specific rainy or dry season. There is a high water period from December through May which is caused by the melting of snow as the Andean summer begins and from the rainy season in the upper jungle. The low water period begins in June and ends with the rising waters in November. While the water level can fluctuate more than 45 feet, the warm and humid climate remains relatively constant throughout the year, giving this area its botanical category of "Everwet Tropical Forest". Normal daytime highs are 88°F and nighttime lows are 72°F.

Into the wild The Cosmo Vision Experience (Mamalluca) is an educational program that has as main objective to connect the human being with himself/herself, with the nature and cultural environment of the Elqui Valley. This program is carried out in the village of Diaguitas, commune of Vicuña (Elqui Valley, IV region). Our base center is Refugio Mamalluca where we will perform activities such as meals and yoga classes. Other activities such as permaculture courses and social activities will be carried out in nearby places, in order to achieve learning in a dynamic and entertaining way, in different aspects;

Kitchen Club it’s a cooking school and event center that’s search to make the kitchen accessible to the people that love to cook and other curious people, to share experience and knowledge around the kitchen. If you have some photographic experience, this workshop will inspire you to new challenges and enrich you as a person, and finally awake the artist within you. We will start the week with a bicycle clinic where we will learn or remind ourselves of basic bike riding skills, posture, techniques, etc and then cover the basic care and maintenance we have to have with our bikes. In the first instance we will measure the abilities and levels of the participants, making an ascent to Cerro Pochoco, reinforcing knowledge of walking techniques, trekking, outdoor cooking and principles of leaving no trace, and then perform various activities in our Challenge Center, where we will discuss topics about teamwork and communication, important concepts for our ultimate goal, to make an approach to the El Morado Glacier.
