NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY (NHS) TOY DRIVE
Las Lomas, the day care center where NHS students have been working as part of their community service efforts, was partially destroyed on July 25th as a result of a major fire. Luckily, no children or other individuals were harmed during the fire. The children are currently being instructed in a very small community hall until the jardin is repaired, hopefully only until the end of August. It is cold and damp.

Las Lomas lost most of the toys and supplies during the fire, so the NHS will be starting a toy drive the week of August 23rd, 2010. There will be a collection bin in front of the administration building; please donate in good condition: dolls, Barbie dolls, wooden puzzles, hula-hoops, large plastic balls, manipulative toys with drag strings, and similar objects without small moving parts. Thank-You.

Marcela Chackal Rossi, Ph.D.
Math/TOK Teacher & NHS Advisor

ECC SEPTEMBER 30th COFFEE TALK: HOW THE BRAIN LEARNS TO READ

A special thanks goes out to all of the PK, K1 and K2 parents who joined us for the ECC Coffee Talk last Thursday!  Participants learned how our ECC program integrates all of Nido\'s Learning Goals and takes children\'s thinking through a four-step process that builds in complexity. We also had some coffee, good conversation and a little bit of fun!

When we meet again on September 30th we will explore how the brain learns to read. You will get to experience what it feels like to be confronted with a new symbolic system and hear what the latest brain research says about the neural networks of language, reading and writing. We will also explain the wide array of strategies we use here at Nido to create optimal conditions for children to learn to speak, read and write.

We hope you can join us for more coffee, conversation, information and fun at either 7:45am or 9:30am on Thursday, September 30th in the MPB!

BE SUNSMART:  UPDATE FROM THE NIDP HEALTH UNIT: Due to the depletion of the ozone layer over the Southern Hemisphere, Chile has high ultraviolet radiation levels. Therefore, with the weather warming up, it is very important that we all start guarding ourselves against the suns rays. The sun promotes three types of skin cancer. Basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas are most common. Fortunately both types are highly curable when detected and treated early. Malignant melanoma is the most dangerous, it is less common, and however, its incidence has increased.  There are many ways that we can protect ourselves from the sun and be sunsmart:

* When in sunlight protect exposed skin by applying a waterproof sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 40 or higher.  Be careful in choosing a product that protects against UVA and UVB radiation.

* Put sunscreen on half an hour before you go out and reapply frequently and generously.  Best for students is to come to school with sunscreen already applied at home and reapply when going out for recess or before an outdoor activity.

* Minimize sun exposure between 10 am and 2 pm when the sun is the strongest.

 * Wear protective clothing outdoors and a wide brimmed hat.  All students should wear hats in recess and for outdoor activities.

 * Always drink lots of liquids to prevent dehydration.

 * Examine your skin on regular basis. Any mole that changes shape, color, or size, any sore that doesn\'t heal, or any persistent patch of irritated skin or small growth may be a sign of cancer and needs professional evaluation.

ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT PREVENTING IS EASIER THAN TREATING.  ENCOURAGE YOUR KIDS TO BE SUNSMART SO WE WILL HAVE HAPPY AND HEALTHY STUDENTS.
