Nido de Aguilas’ Early Years School Support Services strive to meet students’ individual learning needs in an inclusive, responsive, developmentally appropriate, and collaborative environment. We believe that all learners can succeed academically when provided with support targeting their specific needs, and we are committed to giving each child the tools he or she needs in order to reach his or her full potential.

We in the EYS recognize the importance of early identification of and intervention addressing learning needs and differences, and we view our role as a partner with parents in this journey. We provide a multi-tiered model of support that targets the specific needs of individual students, and we support teachers in the implementation of strategies and monitor the progress of all cases. As an international school, Nido recognizes that students bring valuable learning experiences to the classroom through their home languages and cultures, and we take those into account in assessing all learning needs and differences.

Nido’s EYS Support Services Team possesses a variety of resources to help assess and meet students' differing needs, including:

Diagnostic evaluation of present level of performance
Language acquisition support (especially English as a Second Language)
Early literacy assessment
Coordination with a Student Support Team for integrated support across multiple dimensions, including socio-emotional, and with external providers

English Language Acquisition Program

Student Support Team

Nido uses a Student Support Team (SST) model to support student learning needs. The SST is comprised of the ECC administration, a school counselor, classroom teachers, and whichever of the following is needed: the language acquisition specialist, the learning resource teacher, the learning support teacher, and the school nurse. Support Services Case Managers are team liaisons among internal and external supports for students with learning and language acquisition needs. Each student is assigned a Case Manager who seeks to match the child’s individual learning needs with available school and area resources and who acts as an information and documentation hub in order to provide consistent support for the student during his/her educational career at Nido de Aguilas.

Administration, parents, or teachers may make referrals to the team. The exact nature and extent of the child’s talents, skills, and needs are determined, and decisions about appropriate educational programming for each individual child are made in collaboration with the child’s teachers, parents, and any outside specialists who might be involved in the child’s care. The appropriate level of ongoing support and challenge for the child is always the most important objective of the team. In determining an optimal plan, the team is seeking the best possible program for each child.

English Language Acquisition Program

The Early Years Language Acquisition Program is designed to assist students with limited English proficiency. The following services are offered:

Diagnostic evaluation to determine entrance into and exit from the program
Development of listening, speaking, early literacy, and basic writing skills through the teaching of course content material for each grade level

All EYS students receive instruction in English in their classrooms. Kinder 2 students with ESL needs may receive up to 30 minutes a day of individual or small-group English-language instruction. The rest of the day they are mainstreamed in their regular classrooms. Depending on individual needs, the Language Acquisition Specialists (LAS) also may provide extra support within the regular classroom. Students should be mainstreamed fully, with no ESL support, within two years.
