The
Elementary School curriculum is accredited
in the United States as well as with the
Chilean Ministry of Education. Major emphasis
is given to the development of communication
skills in English including reading/writing
and speaking/listening. The program of
study also includes mathematics, science,
social studies, music, art, physical education,
computers, and daily lessons in Spanish
for first and second language learners.
With the exception of Spanish classes,
all instruction is in English and students
must demonstrate the ability to learn
in English.

Second graders
are excited about sharing their thoughts
with others so they are naturally motivated
to develop their repertoire of communication
skills. Instruction focuses on learning
the tools that are the foundation for
good communicators and applying them as
students read, write, listen, and speak.
Second graders learn skills and strategies
in order to facilitate communication and
enjoy reading through a balanced reading
program, that includes shared, guided
and independent reading. Our reading skills
and strategies focus on the ability to:
• Read aloud fluently and accurately
with appropriate intonation and expression.
• Discuss the significance of the
main idea, plot, setting, and characters
in a story.
• Make predictions about the outcomes
of a story.
• Identify the correct sequence of
events in a story.
• Recognize cause-and-effect relationships
in a text.
The learning skills and strategies for
writing are modeled and expectations are
clearly set. The writing process includes
pre-writing, drafting, editing, and publishing.
Through the use of this process, our writing
skills and strategies focus on the ability
to:
• Create written narrative stories,
poems, and expository (factual) writing.
• Use commas correctly in letter
greetings, closures, and items in a series.
• Capitalize all proper nouns.
• Identify and correctly write various
parts of speech, specifically nouns and
verbs.
• Distinguish between complete and
incomplete sentences.
• Spell frequently used, irregular
words correctly.
Second graders learn to be a good team
member by sharing experiences of their
own and listening to others. Our listening
and speaking skills focus on the ability
to:
• Distinguish between a question
and a comment.
• Distinguishes between fact and
opinion.
• Paraphrase information that has
been shared orally by others.
• Give and follow three-step oral
directions.
• Recount experiences in a logical
sequence.
• Report on a topic with facts and
details, drawing from several sources
of information.

The goal of the second grade program is
to bring out mathematically powerful thinkers
and problem solvers, who are confident
and feel comfortable using math in their
every day lives. This is done through:
• Development of computations skills.
• Hands on practice.
• High level thinking.
• Discovery activities.
• Group projects.
• Family involvement.

Second graders are "emergent scientists.
" Their inquisitiveness and natural
curiosity make them outstanding investigators
as well as protectors of their environment!
The Science themes are the connecting
thread in our second grade curriculum:
• Getting to know ourselves and our
family group.
• Looking at the planet Earth, its
continents, land shapes, and all its changes
along time.
• Discovering wild animal life in
their natural habitats, becoming expert
zookeepers.
• Ecology takes us to look after
our environment recycling and reusing,
and reforesting.
• Finally, we study about a big group
of people who were respectful of the environment
and knew how to use things without abusing
them -- the Natives of North America.
