These Language Arts standards define the English language expectations in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing for students to meet by the end of Pre-Kindergarten
1.0 Listening
Stories, Songs, Poems and Directions
PK.1.1 Listens attentively for 5 minutes to a conversation, story, poem or song.
PK.1.2 Follows simple one-step directions.
Receptive Vocabulary
PK.1.3 Understands nouns commonly found in the classroom environment.
PK.1.4 Understands action words, e.g., walk, run.
PK.1.5 Understands negative words, e.g., not, no.
PK.1.6 Understands adjectives, e.g., hard, soft, hot, cold.
PK.1.7 Understands pronouns used in the classroom, e.g., I, you, she, he.
2.0 Speaking
Expression and Vocabulary
PK.2.1 Pronounces words in English clearly enough to be understood by most listeners.
PK.2.2 Expresses basic needs or feelings in single words or short phrases.
PK.2.3 Uses negative words, e.g., no, not.
PK.2.4 Uses adjectives to describe the qualities of objects, e.g., hard, soft.
PK.2.5 Correctly uses high frequency classroom vocabulary words.
Conversation
PK.2.6 Takes turns being a speaker.
PK.2.7 Responds to comments or questions with single words or short phrases.
PK.2.8 Memorizes and repeats a short poem or song.
3.0 Reading
Reading Appreciation
PK.3.1 Expresses interest in reading material.
PK.3.2 Enjoys going to the library and begins to check out books.
PK.3.3 Practices “pretend reading”.
PK.3.4 Exhibits positive attitude and interest in reading.
Concepts of Print
PK.3.5 Distinguishes between a book placed upside down or right side up
Phonological Awareness
PK.3.6 Is aware of gross differences in sounds.
PK.3.7 Claps syllables in names or other common words
PK.3.8 Picks out words that begin with the same letter and sound as their own name.
PK.3.9 Is aware that letters have a name and a sound.
Decoding and Word Recognition
PK.3.10 Recognizes own name.
4.0 Writing
PK.4.1 Uses scribbles and unconventional shapes to write.
PK.4.2 Represents ideas and stories through pictures and dictation.

Demonstrates competency in many movement forms and proficiency in a few
movement forms.
2.0
Applies movement concepts and principles to the learning and development of motor skills.
3.0
Exhibits a physically active lifestyle.
4.0
Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level of physical fitness.

Demonstrates responsible personal and social behavior in physical activity
settings.

Demonstrates understanding and respect for differences among people in
physical activity settings.
