Middle School Guidance
Program Overview
In Middle School years, Counseling
services focus on facilitating
the many transitions our students
go through when they enter Middle
School, as well as helping the
students and their families manage
the emotional, psychological and
physical changes that children
experience during adolescence.
In order to help our adolescents,
the Counseling Office provides
many diverse services using a
developmental approach. The counselor
provides consultation and support
through individual and group counseling,
assessment of students' social
and academic strengths and limitations,
crisis intervention and facilitation
of communication between students,
parents, teachers and administrators.
Working with a Child Study Team
composed of administrators, counselors
and learning specialists, the
Middle School counselor acts as
a case manager to meet the special
needs of identified students.
Individual Counseling:
Counselors are trained to help
students with school related problems
arising from academic, personal,
social or family conflicts. Some
common problems include adjustment
to school, changing peer relationships,
parent expectations and study
habits. Confidentiality is always
observed. You should feel free
to make an appointment with the
counselor whenever you need to
do so. We do not provide private
counseling, but can refer to outside
service providers.
Group Guidance:
At different times through out
the year, counselors will conduct
group guidance sessions. These
sessions are designed to help
students gain insight into their
behaviors, understand their attitudes,
interests and capabilities, and
learn how to make intelligent
decisions. Special interest group
guidance sessions can also be
suggested and requested by students,
i.e., Dealing with Divorce, Developing
Studying Skills, Adjusting to
Moving Away, etc.
Academic Follow-up:
The academic follow-up service
is a series of systematic checks
coordinated through the Guidance
Office to support students who
may be experiencing academic challenges.
It may include regular bi-weekly
progress reports, individual testing,
individual counseling or consultation
with student, parents, teachers,
counselors, and administration.
Scheduling and Placement
Service:
The counselors assist with the
scheduling of students into classes.
Students who experience academic
difficulties in the regular classes
may be provided additional support
services through the Resource
Center or English as a Second
Language (ESL) program. If you
have any question about your placement
in a course you are encouraged
to contact your counselor for
consideration of possible changes.
